C and C++ : Regarding the installation of MinGW suite on my Windows platform

I have installed the MinGW application on my windows system, on typing the command "gcc -v", instead of displaying version details, my command prompt is showing some internal command error (not accepting the command), may i know the solution for the problem?
I would also like to know the further procedure for the execution of the programs!
