How to remove magnifying glass

To undo a mistake in Inkscape I pressed some keys (possibly, Alt-z) in my Mac OS X system. Instead of undo, a magnifying glass symbol appeared on the canvas and all the handles disappeared from the object I was working with. I want to know how to get rid of the zoom option.

Please click on 'Select Tool' on the 'Toolbox bar' located on the left. It is the first and topmost icon represented by a black cursor (arrow). Hovering your mouse over any icon displays a pop-up description of the icon. Alternatively, you may also try 'Esc' or 'F1' key to default back to the selection.
