Energy balance around a reactor
Title
Question
You gave a formula for energy balance around the distillation column as:
Distillate energy flow + Q re-boiler = Distillate energy flow + Bottoms energy flow + Q condenser. Very helpful. How do we do energy balance around a plug flow reactor? Thanks

Answers:

The general energy balance equation around any reactor is given as:

Rate of heat flowing into reactor = Rate of heat flowing out of reactor + Rate of disappearance of heat by reaction within reactor + Rate of accumulation of heat within the reactor.

In case the composition inside the reactor in uniform, the balance equation can be applied to the whole reactor. Where the composition is not uniform, it must be made over a differential element of volume and then integrated across the whole reactor for the appropriate flow and concentration conditions.
