The name "Moodle" was chosen by Martin Dougiamas, the founder and creator of Moodle, in 2002.

According to Martin Dougiamas:

"The name 'Moodle' is a bit of a joke. It's a mix of 'module' and 'oodle' (as in, 'to noodle around'), but also refers to the idea of a dynamic, flexible, and constantly changing learning environment."

Dougiamas wanted a name that reflected the software's:

1. Modular design (easy to extend and customize)

2. Dynamic nature (constantly evolving and improving)

3. Focus on learning (student-centered approach)

The name "Moodle" has become synonymous with open-source Learning Management Systems (LMS) and online learning platforms.
