I can not see the graphic window appearing when I write sudo make check 
also, after the installation is done, when I write "test" this is what I get
"gnuplot> test
WARNING: Plotting with an 'unknown' terminal.
No output will be generated. Please select a terminal with 'set terminal'.
         terminal type is unknown"
what should be done to resolve it

Try the alternate method given in the installation sheet for Ubuntu.

>sudo apt-get install gnuplot

You have first to uninstall Gnuplot completely from your system and install it again.
