Question
As instructed in tutorial video, we need to change the setting in edit>>preferences>>misc..... but in my device it is not showing any miscellaneous setting. Actually the whole UI is different.

This is because version change. We are using now Synfig Studio 1.2.2.
For fit to imported image follow the steps -
1) Go to Edit menu, click on Preferences
2) Click on Editing
3) Under Imported Image  - Scale to fit canvas: click on toggle button and make it ON if it is OFF
