When is the ‘mergePatchPairs’ field populated?

Answers:

We merge faces of a geometry which has 2 different blocks sharing the same face and that face needs the application of a boundary condition. While defining that face in the ‘boundary’ list, the vertices of the face can be ordered in two different ways as the same face is viewed from inside either block. To avoid this, mergePatchPairs is used.
